Leek & Sushi II – Manga Cupcakes, is a compilation manga comic, produced by ITCH Publishing, a company which stresses to its audiences that their manga titles really do have heart. Their aim is to produce manga titles that may not be suitable for mainstream release. These manga titles are quirky, complicated and immensely entertaining.
Manga Cupcakes is perfect for anybody who is interested in trying out small press comics but has no idea what they might like. This issue is filled with different drawing styles, story types and unique talents.
The collection has an overriding theme of ‘the sun’, this is because most of the entries were created specifically for the Manga Jiman Competition. Only the highest quality appears in Leek & Sushi. Personal favourites include, Above the Clouds by Kate Holden and Child of the Sun by Patrick Warren.
We are introduced to the collection by the charismatic Leek and Sushi, a visual representation of the West and East. They bring us into the comic with the charming idea of a tea party in the summer, to which all of the guesting bring their own manga, instead of cakes. Throughout, Leek and Sushi give us comic intermissions which work perfectly within the context of the collection. They are witty, charming and very cute.
Above anything else, this collection is packed with personality, from the quirky drawing styles, to the engaging story snippets. After each story we are then introduced to the artist behind it, a great addition with avatar like images drawn by the wonderful Willie Hews.
This is a perfect chance for you to witness a fantastic range of talent all under one roof. Manga Cupcakes is only £9.50, true value for money when it comes to content and entertainment. I worthy investment and a perfect addition to your manga bookshelf.

It’s so cool to see this here! Willie really did a great job with the arrangement of this book, and I think anybody reading it can feel what a friendly and exciting place the UK’s home grown manga scene is. I’m glad you enjoyed my comic ‘Above the Clouds’ ^_^
I have to say I really love the UK’s small press manga market, there is so much uncovered manga to be found and I am just happy I can raise a bit more awareness.
