To put it plainly, a mini game is a smaller game within a bigger one, it usually relates to the world in which the game has been set but can be anything from chess, to water sports. Usually the game offers the player a chance to earn more points, money or experience through playing the mini games and will encourage you to take a break from the normal gameplay or action.
Mini games are mostly found in RPGs, but can be found in a wide variety of games to date. We have compiled a short list of some of our favourite mini games so far. Disagree with us? Leave a comment in the section below.
Chocobo Racing – Final Fantasy VII
There are an abundance of mini games within Final Fantasy VII, particularly found in a place called the Golden Saucer. Chocobo Racing is by far the best of these. Within the game you start by betting on racing Chocobo, but as you reach higher levels you are able to breed, feed and nurture your Chocobo to win races. The game was only compulsory at one point in Final Fantasy VII to progress, other than that it helped increase player stats for summon magic.
Blitzball – Final Fantasy X
Another Final Fantasy mini game, Blitzball is an aquatic sports-based game with a fantasy twist. The game is very much based on football, where one team has to kick a ball into another team’s goal while under water. This is perhaps one of the most detailed mini games we have come across. Not only do your in-game stats effect the team’s, but there are tournaments, scouts and stadiums. Because of this level of detail, players can find themselves completely distracted from the storyline, especially if they are about to win a tournament.
Poker – Red Dead Redemption
There are plenty of mini games in Red Dead Redemption and although poker may not be the most inventive, it is certainly the best and most accessible. The game can be played at many different locations while roaming within Red Dead Redemption and generally the idea is to make some extra money. Similarly detailed, you can cheat within the game depending on what you are wearing, but if you need some extra help, click here.
Fishing – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Fishing can be found as a mini game in tones of video games, however in Ocarina of Time due to the setting, it somehow stands out from the crowd. Within the mini game, it is simply hook, line and sinker and any gamer can spend hours mundanely fishing and trading in their catch – we just don’t know why we like it so much. Perhaps it has something to do with the masterpiece of a game that contains it.
