As the title suggests, our figure section usually focuses on anime figures and reviews about them. However, there are times when we acquire anime merchandise, board games and in this case, trading card games to review. In our previous Cardfight!! Vanguard review we explain how to play the game and the history behind it. In this review we are taking a look at an extra themed pack and a booster pack. To read our previous review and to understand the mechanics of the game, go here: animepicks.co.uk/cardfight-vanguard-trial-deck-review
The first pack we will focus on is the Maiden Princess of the Cherry Blossoms Trial Deck. Like other trial decks, this one consists of 50 cards, many of which are duplicates in various strengths and types. Within the anime series, Misaki Tokura uses this deck and is featured on the box the cards are contained in. Within the box are the standard extras, a playmat, playbook and starter’s guide.
The deck itself reflects Misaki Tokura’s personality, at first glance it is girly and pink, but on closer inspection the deck is not at all what you would expect. Only five out of the 15 different card types in the pack are in the slightest girly. The rest are technology and mythology-based cards, which are more than a little scary. These cards of course vary in power and type but should not be underestimated. If you are looking to shock your opponent then this deck is for you.
This isn’t to say that all the cards in the deck are good. Every trial deck you can buy always comes with a crap card and this one comes with Weather Girl, Milk. Her slogan is ‘When she forecasts sunshine, everyone carries an umbrella’, not the most inspiring of phrases and doesn’t bode well for gameplay.
The second deck is the Dazzling Divas booster pack. There are five cards in each pack – one of these cards is a shiny version and all cards vary in power and type. In total there are 35 possible cards the owner can collect and each card has an idol/diva present on its surface. Some of the cards in this deck have been used by character Emi Sendou in the anime series, many of which are actually featured in her Bermuda Triangle deck.
As the pack title suggests, all the cards in these booster packs are female and all are moe. This is the sort of pack that is great for collectors and perhaps those of a more girly personality. This doesn’t mean the cards aren’t powerful or useful though – as with all Cardfight!! Vanguard games, strategy is essential to win. The artwork is gorgeous and usually changes from one card to the next depending on the character’s age.
Both of these packs may be packaged to appeal to female players but that by no means excludes male players from also wanting to collect and play with the cards. Both packs have their advantages in terms of strategy and could work well to fool your opponent into thinking you are a weak player. Of course if you are just interested in them for the cute girls, then nobody can blame you for that either!
